Lighting the Way: India’s ₹432 Cr Maritime Upgrade

The Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships (DGLL), under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, is procuring a new domestic lighthouse tender vessel worth ₹432.46 crore under the 'Make in India' initiative.

The modern 91-meter vessel will replace the 24-year-old MV Sagardeep II, which has surpassed its 20-year operational limit. Built by a competitive-bid Indian shipyard over a 36-month timeline, the new ship will feature six buoy pockets, a 1,450-tonne deadweight capacity, and expanded cargo/deck space (1.1x longer and 1.3x wider than its predecessor). It will play a vital role in maintaining India's 205 lighthouses and maritime navigation network, particularly across remote island territories like Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep.
