Machilipatnam Gets a ₹130 Crore Monsoon Makeover

The Andhra Pradesh government has launched a ₹130 crore infrastructure plan to overhaul the sewage and drainage system in Machilipatnam, aiming to resolve chronic waterlogging issues and improve urban sanitation, especially during the monsoon season.

Minister for Mines & Geology and Excise, Kollu Ravindra, announced that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu swiftly responded to public concerns raised during the recent Collectors’ Conference, approving an initial ₹13 crore for Phase 1 of the project. This will cover nearly 50% of the foundational work, while the remaining ₹115 crore will be used for system expansion and long-term upgrades.

The comprehensive plan includes improvements in:

Sewage and drainage infrastructure, Sanitation, Street lighting, Roadworks within municipal limits

The Minister also laid the foundation stone for underground drainage (UGD) and cement concrete (CC) road works worth ₹67.57 lakh across the city.

“The sewage problem near the district jail and several other areas has affected residents for years. The new drainage network will divert rainwater directly into the main canal, eliminating stagnation,” said Kollu Ravindra.

This initiative is part of the state’s broader commitment to urban renewal and improving civic amenities across key towns and cities.
