Machilipatnam’s Highway Makeover: A ₹573Cr Infrastructure Boost

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has thanked Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari for approving over ₹570 crore for the construction of a six-lane external road connecting Machilipatnam port to the national highway network.

Naidu said the project underscores the Centre’s focus on strengthening connectivity to both existing and greenfield ports. He noted that the new corridor would play a crucial role in linking the hinterland with the port, helping reduce logistics costs for industries and exporters.

“Thank you Gadkari for your continuous support in improving the National Highway network in Andhra Pradesh. We are happy to see the focus on connectivity of existing and greenfield ports under development,” the Chief Minister posted on X in response to the Union Minister.

Naidu also assured full cooperation from the state government to ensure the timely execution of National Highway projects, emphasising that improved road infrastructure would spur economic growth and create new employment opportunities.

Earlier, Gadkari had announced that the Centre has sanctioned ₹573.77 crore for a six-lane external road linking the NH-65 and NH-216 junction to Machilipatnam port via the Machilipatnam bypass section of NH-216. He said the project would provide direct and seamless connectivity between the port and the national highway corridor, significantly reducing freight turnaround time and easing traffic congestion.

The approved works include a six-lane main carriageway, service roads, three flyovers, and an overpass-cum-railway overbridge, aimed at boosting overall logistics efficiency. The port connectivity project is expected to strengthen Andhra Pradesh’s maritime infrastructure and support the state’s ambition to emerge as a major trade and manufacturing hub on India’s east coast.
