The Maharashtra government has approved plans to establish a new film city in Igatpuri, Nashik district, aimed at easing the load on Mumbai’s Goregaon Film City and attracting more Bollywood productions.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has directed the revenue department to transfer 47 hectares of land in Mundhegaon, Igatpuri, to the cultural affairs department for the project. Strategically located less than two hours from Mumbai via the Mumbai–Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway, Igatpuri offers a scenic backdrop ideal for films and TV serials.
The proposal, first floated in 2009, was revisited after evaluating three potential locations, with Igatpuri ultimately selected for its accessibility and natural beauty. Food and Civil Supplies Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, a long-time proponent of the project, emphasized the benefits to filmmakers and the local economy, citing the region’s picturesque setting and ease of travel.
The move also comes amid growing competition from other states—such as Uttar Pradesh, which has been aggressively courting Bollywood with modern studios and incentives. Maharashtra’s new film city is expected to boost local tourism, generate employment, and serve as a catalyst for regional economic development.
