The Mangaluru Central Railway Station is on the verge of transforming into a bustling commercial center. Plans for its redevelopment, handled by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA), are nearing completion. Upon handover to the Southern Railway's construction wing, the tendering process for the redevelopment will commence.
The vision includes a modern transportation infrastructure and an interconnected urban hub resembling a city commercial center. The station will feature spaces for various commercial activities like shopping, cinema, and restaurants. Additionally, it will provide multi-level car parking and improved passenger amenities on the first floor, while platforms will be situated on the ground level.
Foot overbridges will connect all five platforms, and offices at the station premises will move to multi-storey buildings. Simultaneously, the adjacent Railway Colony will undergo a redesign, replacing individual housing units with multi-storey apartments to optimize space and create more functional urban areas. RLDA is adopting modular construction for this transformation, aligning with the recognition of underutilized station spaces becoming multifunctional urban centers in cities.
