MbPA’s Next Big Expansion: Energy Cargo Infrastructure

The Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA) is weighing a series of major infrastructure upgrades to accommodate growing energy cargo volumes. The proposed expansions include new crude-oil jetties and specialized chemical berths designed to support expanded processing capacity from key refineries, including BPCL and HPCL.

MbPA Chairperson Angamuthu emphasized that the project will rely on a collaborative strategy with key industry stakeholders.

Liquid cargo remains the cornerstone of operations at Mumbai Port, representing roughly three-fifths of all traffic. Over the past 15 years, vessel-borne crude-oil traffic has jumped 52%—rising from 17.22 million metric tonnes (MMT) in 2011–12 to 26.24 MMT in 2025–26. Port estimates indicate that every 10% increase in POL cargo adds approximately 4.5 MMT to annual traffic, driving the strategic push for upgraded infrastructure.
