Mumbai Port 2047: Charting the $100$ MTPA Gateway to India

The Mumbai Port Authority has unveiled its Integrated Port Master Plan 2047, outlining long-term strategies to expand capacity and enhance operational efficiency over the next two decades.

The plan targets an increase in cargo handling to over 100 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) and includes modernisation of key infrastructure, particularly liquid bulk and chemical handling systems. A major component of the strategy involves transforming underutilised port land into productive maritime and urban districts, supporting broader regional economic development. The roadmap is supported by a CRISIL traffic assessment projecting overall port traffic to rise from 68.3 MTPA to 106.2 MTPA by 2053.

Liquid bulk movement through pipelines is expected to grow from 39.0 MTPA to 56.5 MTPA, alongside steady increases in coastal and road-based cargo such as steel, cement, fertilisers, chemicals, and automobiles. The plan aims to address competitive pressure from the adjacent Nhava Sheva port and mitigate Mumbai’s congestion challenges, ensuring Mumbai Port remains a vital national gateway.
