New Shillong’s Water Revolution: 30% Civil Work Complete

Meghalaya Minister-in-Charge of Public Health Engineering, Marcuise N. Marak, reviewed the progress of the New Shillong Water Supply Project, a key initiative aimed at providing sustainable drinking water to the rapidly expanding New Shillong Township and 32 surrounding villages.

The project is regarded as vital for supporting future urban growth and strengthening long-term water security in the state capital region. During an on-site inspection at Nongkhali village, the Minister expressed satisfaction with the pace of work, despite initial challenges.

He stated that civil works have achieved around 30 percent completion, while procurement of major components—including pipes, pumps, and machinery—has reached nearly 90 percent. Early delays were attributed to land-related issues and difficult terrain, particularly the steep, gorge-like location of the dam site.

Expressing optimism about the project timeline, the Minister said dam construction is expected to commence soon. “Most of the foundational work is nearing completion. Excavation and land clearing required for construction are almost finished. Within the next 10 days, we expect to begin construction of the dam,” he said.
