NHAI Greenlights ₹3,500 Cr Dehradun-Mussoorie Shortcut

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has approved the construction of a 42-km highway connecting Dehradun and Mussoorie, a project aimed at reducing travel time between the two destinations from up to 90 minutes to around 30 minutes.

The project, estimated to cost ₹3,500 crore, will originate at Jhajhra in Dehradun and terminate at Gandhi Chowk in Mussoorie. It will offer a faster and more efficient alternative to the existing 34-km hill road, which frequently experiences congestion, particularly during peak tourist seasons. A major component of the project is the construction of two tunnels to address the region’s challenging Himalayan terrain. One tunnel, approximately 2.9 km long, will pass beneath the George Everest peak, while another tunnel of about 2 km will be constructed beyond the Everest House stretch.

The tunnels are designed to bypass steep gradients, sharp curves, and landslide-prone sections, thereby improving traffic flow, enhancing safety, and ensuring more reliable connectivity between Dehradun and Mussoorie.
