Union Minister of State for Railways and Jal Shakti, V. Somanna, has announced a record allocation of ₹10,440 crore for the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) in the Union Budget 2025-26.
During his visit to Guwahati Railway Station, the minister highlighted the significant progress in railway infrastructure across the northeastern region. He noted that Assam, which had no railway electrification before 2014, is set to achieve 100% electrification by the end of 2025. Additionally, railway line doubling projects are advancing rapidly to enhance capacity and efficiency.
Somanna reaffirmed the government’s commitment to modernizing railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS). As part of this initiative, Guwahati Railway Station is undergoing redevelopment at an estimated cost of ₹181.09 crore. The project includes upgraded facilities such as spacious waiting halls, QR code ticketing counters, and enhanced security measures.
The minister also inspected Dibrugarh Railway Station and the Bogibeel Rail-cum-Road Bridge over the Brahmaputra, emphasizing the government’s focus on strengthening connectivity between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
NFR's Chief Public Relations Officer, Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, stated that these investments will improve passenger experience and drive regional economic growth.
