NTPC Ltd plans to establish a coal-to-synthetic natural gas (SNG) facility with a proposed capacity of 5–10 million tonnes per year, marking a significant step toward cleaner fuel production and diversified energy operations.
In October 2025, NTPC signed an agreement with Engineers India Ltd (EIL) to jointly develop the project, which will utilise high-ash coal from NTPC’s captive mines and convert it into synthetic natural gas. The produced SNG will be used for internal consumption or commercial sale. NTPC is expected to appoint a technical consultant within the current financial year to assist in facility design, with project execution likely to begin next fiscal year.
Synthetic natural gas (syngas) has versatile applications, including power generation and the production of methanol, ammonia, and fertilizers. This initiative aligns with NTPC’s broader strategy to expand its total installed capacity to 149 GW by FY32, encompassing renewable and nuclear energy alongside cleaner fossil-based technologies.
