NTPC Taps Concord for World-First 3,100 HP Hydrogen Loco

Concord Control Systems (CNCRD) has secured an order from NTPC to develop the world’s largest 3,100 HP hydrogen-fuelled locomotive propulsion system.

Through its subsidiary, Advance Rail Controls Pvt Ltd (ARCPL), Concord will design and develop an advanced propulsion system capable of converting a conventional diesel locomotive into a hydrogen-powered engine—marking a global first in heavy-duty rail technology. The project forms part of India’s broader push to achieve net-zero carbon emissions in the rail sector by 2030 and positions the country at the forefront of green locomotive innovation.

The hydrogen-powered propulsion system will significantly surpass the previous global benchmark of 1,600 HP for hydrogen-fuelled rail systems. Importantly, the project is not limited to a prototype, but is intended as a fully deployable solution for freight operations.

Commenting on the development, Gaurav Lath, Joint Managing Director of Concord Control Systems, said the company’s focus is on advancing research-led innovation to deliver propulsion technologies that support the global transition towards zero-emission transportation, with India serving as the starting point for scalable, future-ready railway solutions.
