NTPC's 30 GW Coal Goal and Renewables Drive

India’s state-owned power utility, National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), has increased its coal-based power generation target to 30 GW by 2031–32, up from the previously projected 26 GW, driven by sustained high electricity demand.

For FY26, NTPC plans to add 3 GW of coal capacity and 5 GW of renewable energy capacity. In FY25, the company has already commissioned 660 MW of thermal and 3.3 GW of renewable energy capacity. This aligns with the government’s broader goal to add 80 GW of coal-based capacity by 2032, while simultaneously scaling up renewables to meet an expected peak demand exceeding 270 GW this summer.

As part of its long-term energy diversification strategy, NTPC is actively investing in renewables, hydro, nuclear, and alternative fuels such as ethanol and methanol.

In the nuclear sector, NTPC aims to contribute 30 GW to India's 100 GW nuclear capacity target by 2047. The company is currently building 2.8 GW of nuclear capacity in collaboration with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL), with projects underway in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Presently, India’s 8 GW of operational nuclear capacity is solely managed by NPCIL.
