Offering major relief to commuters, the first bridge along the 26-km Edappally–Moothakunnam stretch of NH 66—the new Varappuzha bridge—is set to open to traffic in the first week of December.
Built at a cost of ₹100 crore by Oriental Structural Engineers, the 1.03-km bridge was completed in just 604 days. It includes modern safety features such as eight remotely controlled PTZ surveillance cameras. Designed using the balanced cantilever method to allow vessel movement on the Periyar River, the bridge meets essential navigational clearance requirements. “The final approach work is progressing and will be opened to traffic from the first week of December,” a senior NHAI official confirmed.
Featuring 26 spans—including 83-metre and 120-metre river spans—the bridge represents a significant step toward easing severe congestion along this busy corridor.
