Panvel-Karjat Railway Line To Begin In Dec 2025

The ongoing "Double Line Project" for the upcoming suburban rail corridor in the Mumbai region, linking Panvel and Karjat, is on track for completion by December 2025. Managed by the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC), the project has achieved a significant milestone with a 46 percent completion status.

With a sanctioned budget of Rs 812 crore, the initiative encompasses the construction of three tunnels (Nadhal tunnel - 219 mtrs., Wavrely tunnel - 2.6 km, and Kirawali tunnel - 300 mtrs.) and two rail flyovers, in addition to major and minor bridges, road under bridges, and road over bridges along the proposed alignment.

The acquisition of more than 57 hectares of private land, along with 4.4 hectares of government land, has paved the way for the project. Furthermore, necessary permissions for forest land were secured in August 2022, and construction has already commenced in these areas.

MRVC is actively engaged in developing station infrastructure at Panvel, Chikhale, Mohape, Chowk, and Karjat stations. Simultaneously, the construction of railway flyovers in Panvel and Karjat, along with work on the three tunnels, is in progress.

Upon completion, the new corridor will establish a vital link connecting Navi Mumbai with Raigad district in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). This strategic connectivity is poised to catalyze the development of Panvel, Karjat, and the proposed Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (NAINA). Furthermore, the corridor will facilitate local train services between Mumbai and Karjat via Panvel, enhancing overall transportation in the region.
