Parandur airport's 1st phase to take off with Rs 13,800 cr

The first phase of a new greenfield airport at Parandur near Chennai is set to cost Rs 13,854 crore, with the full project amounting to Rs 29,143 crore. Prepared by Louis Berger International for Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO), the pre-feasibility report outlines a phased implementation plan. The initial phase, slated for operational readiness by 2029, aims to accommodate 20 million passengers annually.

TIDCO plans to commence work by the end of next year following land acquisition, requiring a total of 5,369 acres (2,172.73 hectares). Notably, one-fourth of the land comprises waterbodies, while the rest includes irrigated agricultural land (47.6%), dry farmland (16.35%), roads, government land, and built-up areas. Land valuation will be based on the circle rate determined by the registration department.

The resettlement action plan budget will cover land acquisition, demolition costs, and contingencies. The second phase, from January 2033 to December 2035, will increase capacity by 30 million passengers annually. The third phase, from January 2041 to December 2042, will add another 20 million passengers.

The final phase, from January 2044 to December 2046, aims to handle an additional 30 million passengers. During construction, approximately 8,000 workers will be employed temporarily, ensuring a significant workforce presence.
