PGCIL Approves ₹1,227 Crore Bhadrawati HVDC Upgrade

On 17 December 2025, the board of Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) approved an investment proposal for the refurbishment of the Bhadrawati (Chandrapur) HVDC back-to-back system (2 × 500 MW).

The project forms part of the additional capital expenditure planned under the 2024–29 tariff block and is estimated to cost Rs 1,226.93 crore. The refurbishment is aimed at improving the efficiency, reliability, and operational performance of the HVDC system, with an implementation timeline of 36 months from the date of award.

The approval underscores PGCIL’s ongoing commitment to upgrading and maintaining critical power transmission infrastructure, ensuring the continued robustness and reliability of India’s transmission network.
