Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Rajiv Ranjan Singh, announced on July 2, 2025, that the Central Government is evaluating a ₹100 crore proposal to establish an Integrated Aqua Park in Jammu and Kashmir under Phase-II of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). The park is envisioned as a national model for cold-water aquaculture, leveraging the region’s unique ecological potential.
The Minister noted that flagship schemes like the Blue Revolution, the Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF), and PMMSY have significantly bolstered the fisheries sector in J&K. Under PMMSY, the Centre has allocated ₹852 crore for Himalayan and North Eastern states, including ₹300 crore specifically for J&K, to boost fish production, strengthen infrastructure, and create employment opportunities.
Given J&K’s suitability for cold-water fisheries, the Ministry has designated Anantnag as a Cold-Water Fisheries Cluster, with Kulgam and Shopian identified as partner districts. The initiative aims to develop an integrated aquaculture value chain, promoting sustainable livelihoods and economic resilience in the region.
This move underscores the Centre’s commitment to holistic rural development, farmer empowerment, and building a self-reliant India through focused investments in the fisheries sector.
