To address the long-standing drinking water shortage in Agra’s Yamuna-side colonies, the Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam (UPJN) has commenced construction of an 85 million liters per day (MLD) intake well at Poiyia Ghat, along with a 55 MLD water treatment plant (WTP) nearby.
The intake structure, positioned 3–7 meters inside the river depending on soil conditions, will channel raw water directly to the WTP located approximately half a kilometre away. Once treated, the water will be distributed through a newly laid 231-km pipeline network, ensuring morning and evening supply to around 55,000 households. The project, expected to be completed within 12–18 months, aims to eliminate reliance on private tankers and seasonal shortages that have long affected newer Yamuna-belt localities.
This initiative is part of the UP Government’s Drinking Water Scheme (Phase I & II), reinforcing sustainable and equitable water access for the region.
