Maharashtra has become the first state to join the Centre’s nuclear power generation initiative, as announced by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Maharashtra State Electricity Generation Company (Mahagenco) and the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. (NPCIL), marking a milestone collaboration between a state-run utility and the national nuclear operator. CM Fadnavis highlighted the critical role of clean and reliable power in supporting India’s economic growth and its 2047 development goals, aligning with the Prime Minister’s vision of a self-reliant, clean energy-driven power sector.
Maharashtra’s participation is expected to help meet rising electricity demand, particularly from data centres, which currently consume a significant share of the country’s power capacity. The state also stands to benefit from India’s expanding nuclear programme, which includes a pipeline of new reactors and a ₹20,000-crore allocation for small modular reactor development.
