Powering the Chenab: The Rs 18,700 Cr Sawalkote Hydro Push

The Indian Ministry of Power is evaluating a financial assistance package for the strategic Sawalkote Hydroelectric Project. Situated on the Chenab River in Jammu and Kashmir, the 1,856 MW project aims to significantly boost regional power capacity by generating 7,994.73 MUs per year.

To help offset the Rs 31,380 crore development cost, a proposed subordinated debt of Rs 18,700 crore is under review. This initiative aligns with national goals to accelerate hydropower development in the region. The proposal is currently awaiting clearance from the Expenditure Finance Committee prior to final governmental sanction.
