RIL’s Rs 2.73 Lakh Crore Bet on Underground Coal Gasification

Reliance Industries (RIL) has committed an estimated Rs 2.73 lakh crore over 30 years to build India’s first integrated underground coal gasification (UCG) complex in the Eluru district of Andhra Pradesh. Utilizing coal blocks acquired via government e-auctions, the initiative converts deep, unmineable coal reserves into synthesis gas for industrial feedstocks like fertilizers and chemicals. RIL will kick off the project with an initial phased investment of up to Rs 3,000 crore between Q3 2026 and Q4 2027 to conduct pilot testing, assess geology, and verify commercial viability before scaling up domestic supply chains.
