Powering Up: NUPPL Strikes First Coal at Pachwara South

Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited (NUPPL), a joint venture between NLC India Limited and U.P. Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited with a 51:49 equity structure, has commenced coal production at the Pachwara South Coal Block in Dumka district, Jharkhand.

The coal from this block will supply fuel to NUPPL’s 3 × 660 MW Ghatampur Thermal Power Plant in Uttar Pradesh. Allocated by the Ministry of Coal on October 3, 2016, the Pachwara South block was initially unexplored and has since been comprehensively evaluated through detailed drilling.

The block contains extractable reserves of approximately 264.84 million tonnes, with a rated mining capacity of 9 million tonnes per annum and an average coal grade of G10. Following the initiation of overburden removal on December 19, 2025, the project achieved a major milestone with the start of coal production on March 29, 2026, strengthening fuel security for the Ghatampur power plant.
