Union Minister of Power, Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, inaugurated the commercial operation of Unit 2 of the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project via a virtual ceremony from New Delhi on December 23.
The Subansiri project is expected to significantly support the economic development of Northeast India while strengthening the national power grid and advancing India’s ‘Net Zero’ commitments. Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary (Power), highlighted that the project will enhance regional energy availability and support the country’s transition to sustainable power systems. NHPC Chairman Bhupender Gupta noted that the project will deliver reliable renewable energy to meet rising electricity demand.
With Unit 2 now operational, the project is progressing steadily toward the timely commissioning of its remaining units, which will play a crucial role in expanding India’s renewable energy capacity. The Union Minister described the commissioning as a “testament to years of hard work, dedication, and teamwork,” underscoring the project’s significance in achieving India’s clean energy objectives.
