Construction has begun on the Metro extension between Vanaz and Chandni Chowk in Pune, marking an important step toward improving connectivity to the city’s western gateway.
The 1.5-km elevated corridor, approved last year, will feature two new stations—Kothrud Depot and Chandni Chowk—aimed at strengthening last-mile access for commuters. The project is being carried out by Maha Metro, which has recently appointed a contractor for the construction of the viaduct and stations. Preliminary activities, including soil testing and site surveys, are already underway in the Chandni Chowk area. Work will be executed in phases, with traffic barricading planned in coordination with local authorities to minimise disruptions.
Alongside the Metro development, a flyover has been proposed near Kothrud Depot to help reduce traffic congestion in the area. Officials, in collaboration with the Pune Municipal Corporation, have conducted several site inspections to finalise station locations and access points. Once completed, the extension is expected to enhance transit efficiency, ease road congestion, and further strengthen Pune’s expanding Metro network.
