Punjab's Rail Network Gets a Massive ₹443 Crore Boost

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced the construction of a new 18-km Rajpura–Mohali railway line in Punjab, with an estimated cost of ₹443 crore. This strategic link will significantly improve regional rail connectivity by reducing the distance between Ludhiana and Chandigarh by approximately 66 km, eliminating the need to route via Ambala.

The new line will establish direct access between Chandigarh and all 13 districts of the Malwa region, streamlining both passenger and freight movement across southern Punjab.

In addition, the Minister proposed a new Vande Bharat Express service connecting Firozpur Cantt, Bathinda, Patiala, and Delhi. The 486-km route is expected to be completed in about six hours and 40 minutes, enhancing high-speed connectivity for major urban centers in the region.

Minister Vaishnaw noted a substantial increase in railway investment in Punjab—from ₹225 crore during 2009–14 to over ₹5,421 crore at present. He also acknowledged Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu for his support, reaffirming the central government’s commitment to accelerating infrastructure development in the state.
