Indian Railways has approved infrastructure and technology modernisation projects worth over ₹765 crore to strengthen power supply, enhance freight capacity, and upgrade communication systems on high-traffic routes.
The initiatives primarily focus on electric traction upgrades and expanding the digital communication backbone to improve operational efficiency and meet rising freight and passenger demand. One key project involves upgrading the electric traction system on the 106 km Duvvada–Visakhapatnam–Vizianagaram stretch under the East Coast Railway, replacing the existing 1×25 kV system with a 2×25 kV system. This upgrade will enable heavier train loads, higher speeds, and improved reliability.
A similar upgrade has also been approved for the 126 km Raichur–Guntakal section, which runs through Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh under the South Central Railway’s Guntakal Division.
These improvements are expected to boost the efficiency of key freight corridors, particularly those transporting minerals and industrial cargo to Visakhapatnam.
