Raipur–Dhanbad Corridor: A ₹3,147 Crore Leap Forward

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has commenced construction on a key stretch of the ₹3,147 crore Pathalgaon–Kunkuri to Chhattisgarh–Jharkhand border section of NH-43, marking significant progress in the development of the 627-km Raipur–Dhanbad economic corridor.

This stretch is a vital component of the corridor, which aims to enhance connectivity between Raipur and Dhanbad while strengthening links across major industrial centres in central and eastern India. Of the total corridor length, nearly 384 km runs through Chhattisgarh, underscoring the state’s importance in the project.

The 104.25-km Pathalgaon–Jharkhand border segment is being developed as a strategic transport route connecting key cities such as Raipur, Bilaspur, Raigarh and Korba with industrial hubs in Jharkhand, including Dhanbad, Ranchi and Jamshedpur. The improved connectivity is expected to facilitate smoother movement of coal, steel and other freight, reducing travel time and logistics costs.

Designed as a high-capacity transport corridor rather than a standard highway, the project includes 382 structures such as major and minor bridges, flyovers and an elevated viaduct. It also features numerous culverts and underpasses to ensure efficient traffic flow while accommodating pedestrians, livestock and wildlife, minimising disruption to local communities and ecosystems.

NHAI officials describe the stretch as a critical backbone of the broader corridor, expected to boost inter-state trade and logistics between Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.

The project is also set to benefit the tribal-dominated Jashpur region by improving connectivity for towns like Pathalgaon, Kansabel, Kunkuri, Duldula and Jashpur, enhancing access to markets and essential services.

Beyond connectivity, the corridor is expected to create employment and business opportunities while strengthening economic linkages between central India and the mineral-rich eastern region, supporting broader regional development.
