Riding the Wave: Tamil Nadu Aims for $5 Billion Seafood Export Boom

The Tamil Nadu government has launched an ambitious plan to transform the state into a global seafood export hub, targeting USD 5 billion (approx. ₹41,750 crore) in seafood exports by significantly scaling up value-added processing and coastal infrastructure.

The announcement was made during the Tamil Nadu Seafood – Business Connect event held in Chennai, where senior officials engaged with global importers and domestic seafood industry stakeholders to foster strategic partnerships.

Speaking at the event, State Industries Minister Dr. TRB Rajaa stated, “Under the leadership of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Tamil Nadu aims to move beyond raw seafood exports and become a centre for processed, high-quality, globally competitive seafood products.”

The initiative includes the development of modern seafood processing units, cold chain logistics, and export-grade packaging infrastructure along Tamil Nadu’s 1,076-km coastline, the second-longest in India. A comprehensive roadmap will be drafted, and strategic investments will be mobilized to support the initiative, in response to rising global demand for processed and sustainably sourced seafood.
