Under Namami Gange Mission Phase II, four major sewage treatment plants (STPs) have become operational in Uttar Pradesh during the current financial year, strengthening efforts to improve river water quality and sanitation infrastructure.
The newly commissioned facilities include two STPs in Agra with capacities of 31 MLD and 35 MLD, a 55 MLD STP in Varanasi, and a 5 MLD STP in Shuklaganj, Unnao. The Agra projects, developed at a combined cost of ₹842 crore, are expected to benefit approximately 25 lakh people. The Varanasi STP, constructed at a cost of ₹308 crore, will serve around 18 lakh residents, while the Unnao STP, valued at ₹65 crore, will benefit more than three lakh people.
According to Joginder Singh, Project Director of the State Clean Ganga Mission, a total of 74 STPs have been approved across Uttar Pradesh, of which 41 have already been completed. At present, 152 STPs are operational statewide, playing a crucial role in reducing pollution and advancing the state’s Ganga rejuvenation efforts.
These projects form part of the broader Namami Gange initiative aimed at enhancing sanitation infrastructure and protecting vital water resources across the region.
