₹1.6 Lakh Crore Bet: India’s Semiconductor Ambitions Take Flight

Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that four companies—Micron, CG Power, Kaynes Technology, and Tata Electronics—will commence commercial semiconductor manufacturing in India in 2026.

The development marks a major milestone in India’s push for self-reliance in semiconductor production. Micron, CG Power, and Kaynes Technology, which began pilot production last year, are set to transition to commercial operations, while Tata Electronics’ Assam facility is expected to begin pilot production by mid-2026. The sector is also witnessing growing interest from countries such as Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea, reflecting rising global confidence in India’s semiconductor ecosystem.

Emphasising the strategic importance of semiconductors, Vaishnaw said they are critical to key sectors including healthcare, transportation, and defence, making them vital to India’s economic and national security.

The Union government has approved 10 semiconductor manufacturing projects with total investments exceeding ₹1.60 lakh crore across multiple states. The Minister also highlighted the revised Design Linked Incentive (DLI 2.0) scheme, which focuses on long-term growth, innovation, and market validation.
