On 7 December 2025, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated a major drinking water project that brings Mullaperiyar river water to Madurai, expanding supply to 2,57,750 households. The ₹2,070.69-crore scheme, implemented under the Union government’s AMRUT programme, is now fully operational after extensive trial runs.
A check dam constructed at Vairavanaar in the Lower Camp area enables the extraction of 125 MLD of water, which is pumped by four 425 HP motors to an overhead tank and conveyed through a 94-km pipeline to Pannaipatti. After treatment, the water travels another 54 km to Madurai and is distributed through 38 newly built overhead tanks and 43 existing ones.
The project was initially launched by the previous AIADMK government, with former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami laying the foundation stone and describing it as “a milestone for Madurai’s future.” Although delays slowed progress, the current administration completed the remaining work. Senior officials, including Corporation Commissioner Chitra Vijayan, recently inspected the finished facilities.
