₹3,800Cr Infrastructure Boost for Chennai Metrowater

The state government’s in-principle approval has paved the way for Chennai Metrowater to implement two major projects aimed at strengthening the city’s water supply and sewerage infrastructure.

The first project, with an estimated cost of ₹3,108.55 crore, involves the development of a ring main water distribution system across the Greater Chennai Corporation area. The circular pipeline will interlink all major water sources with distribution points, ensuring uninterrupted supply even if one source becomes unavailable. Funded through loans from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the project is expected to be completed within four years, with the tendering process already in progress. Designed to handle a projected flow of 1,762 million litres per day, the system is expected to meet Chennai’s water demand until 2057.

In addition, the government has approved a ₹689.40 crore project to modernise the aging sewerage network connected to the Nesapakkam sewage treatment plant. Also supported by ADB funding, this project will upgrade infrastructure serving over 1.16 lakh households and is scheduled for completion within three years.
