The Central Government has disbursed more than ₹8,000 crore towards the Chennai Metro Rail Phase II project, including ₹3,000 crore released in 2025 to date. This forms part of the ₹63,246 crore mega infrastructure initiative, funded jointly by the Centre, Tamil Nadu Government, and international lending agencies.
In a recent Lok Sabha session, Minister of State for Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu noted that ₹5,219.57 crore was released during FY 2024–25, and ₹8,445.8 crore has been allocated for FY 2025–26 under the central budget.
Phase II spans 118.9 km and consists of three corridors:
Madhavaram–SIPCOT, Light House–Poonamallee, Madhavaram–Sholinganallur
Approved as a 50:50 joint venture between the Centre and State in October 2024, the project has achieved 44.33% physical progress and 40.43% financial progress as of June 30, 2025.
The first elevated stretch—Corridor 4 between Poonamallee and Porur—is scheduled for inauguration in December 2025, with additional sections expected to become operational in 2026. Once completed, the expanded metro network will significantly improve mass transit and connectivity across Chennai.
