Semiconductor Surge in India: Govt Evaluating 9 Manufacturing Plans

Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, has revealed that there are currently nine semiconductor manufacturing proposals in the evaluation phase. The Ministry has received two fabrication (fab) proposals, four proposals for Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT), and three proposals for compound fabs. These promising proposals are presently undergoing detailed analysis.

In his remarks on National Startup Day, the Minister expressed optimism about witnessing a surge in startups across emerging sectors such as semiconductors, electronics, artificial intelligence, and high-performance computing in the near future.

Highlighting the government's support, Chandrasekhar noted that the Centre extends financial assistance to semiconductor manufacturers through its USD 10 billion Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, unveiled in 2021. Additionally, various states are actively promoting manufacturing endeavors based on their specific policies.
