Siemens Delivers 9,000 HP D9 Powerhouses to Indian Railways

Siemens has officially handed over the first batch of 9,000-horsepower electric locomotives (D9 class) to Indian Railways, marking a significant boost to the country’s freight transportation capacity.

Capable of speeds up to 120 km/h, these locomotives are among the most powerful freight engines in operation globally, enhancing efficiency and accelerating cargo movement across the rail network. Notably, they are the first rolling stock in India to be evaluated and certified under the European Standard EN 14363, underscoring high safety and performance standards. The project has also seen rapid execution, with the locomotives entering commercial service just 36 months after contract award.

The locomotives are being manufactured at Siemens’ facility in Dahod, Gujarat. In parallel, a comprehensive maintenance ecosystem is being developed across Visakhapatnam, Raipur, Kharagpur, and Pune, with the Visakhapatnam depot already operational.

The contract is structured as a long-term partnership encompassing design, manufacturing, and 35 years of maintenance, ensuring sustained reliability, performance, and lifecycle support for Indian Railways’ freight operations.
