Silicon Sands: Gujarat’s ₹1,600 Crore Leap into the Future

Gujarat’s semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem is poised for a significant expansion, with investment proposals exceeding ₹1,600 crore announced on Sunday. The planned investments span manufacturing units, specialty chemicals, equipment production, R&D centres, and advanced technology startups, reflecting rising interest from Japanese, South Korean, and Malaysian firms in the state’s electronics sector.

Japan’s Horiba Group, through its Indian arm Horiba India Pvt Ltd, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Gujarat government to set up a dedicated R&D centre in Ahmedabad. The facility will focus on developing semiconductor-grade mass-flow controllers and advanced instrumentation solutions.

Malaysia-based Hotayi Electronic has also entered into an agreement to establish a ₹250 crore electronics manufacturing unit at Sanand GIDC. The plant is expected to generate around 1,000 jobs and will manufacture high-precision components for the semiconductor and allied industries.

During the Gujarat Semiconnect conference in Gandhinagar, further proposals were unveiled. Hi-Spec Ltd plans to invest ₹750 crore to build a facility for producing semiconductor-grade hydrofluoric acid, a key material in wafer processing. Meanwhile, Kiansh International Technologies, in collaboration with a South Korean partner, has proposed a ₹25 crore investment to manufacture gas abatement systems and scrubbers for the semiconductor and solar sectors.

Collectively, these initiatives are set to strengthen Gujarat’s emergence as a leading hub for advanced semiconductor manufacturing in India.
