Steeling the Future: Bokaro’s ₹25,000 Crore Leap to 7.55 MTPA

Union Minister Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma has announced a proposed brownfield expansion of the Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL), which aims to raise its production capacity from the current 5.25 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 7.55 MTPA.

This expansion aligns with India’s objective of strengthening self-reliance in steel manufacturing and supports Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of achieving a national steel production capacity of 300 MTPA by 2030. The project is expected to involve substantial capital investment, the adoption of advanced technologies, and significant employment generation.

Approximately 2,500 permanent jobs and nearly 10,000 indirect employment opportunities are anticipated, providing a major boost to Jharkhand’s economy. The expansion is projected to attract an investment of around ₹25,000 crore to the state. Varma noted that discussions regarding the project are ongoing and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to bringing the expansion to fruition.
