Aluva’s New Lifeline: The ₹523 Crore Water Treatment Plan

The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) is set to receive approval for its proposed 190-million litres per day (MLD) water treatment plant, a major infrastructure project aimed at improving water supply across the Kochi region. The project will benefit five municipalities and 13 grama panchayats.

Funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) at an estimated cost of ₹523 crore, the project is designed to address the projected water demand gap up to 2050. Beneficiary areas include Kochi Corporation and the municipalities of Aluva, Thrikkakara, Kalamassery, Eloor and Maradu, along with surrounding grama panchayats.

The plant, to be constructed in Aluva, will incorporate advanced technologies such as a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system to enable automated and efficient operations. Additional features include dual-media filtration, solar-powered sensors and flood-resilient design, supported by the plant’s elevated location.

According to KWA sources, the facility will ensure efficient water treatment, accurate monitoring and an uninterrupted water supply. Construction is expected to be completed within 15 months and will play a key role in meeting the region’s growing water demand, which is projected to reach 478 MLD by 2050.
