Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has directed that the long-delayed 450 MW Shongtong-Karcham hydroelectric project in Kinnaur district be completed by November 2026. During a site visit on June 9, 2025, the Chief Minister inspected key components of the project, including the power house at Karcham and the barrage site at Powari, where he interacted with engineers and workers.
The Chief Minister noted that the project, under construction for the past 13 years, has been significantly accelerated under the current administration and is now progressing on schedule. Once operational, the project is expected to generate around Rs 1,000 crore in annual revenue, providing a major boost to the state’s economy.
Emphasizing the state’s commitment to efficient utilization of river water resources, CM Sukhu also announced plans for the government to take over other major hydroelectric ventures, including the Dhaulasidh, Luhri, and Sunni projects.
Looking ahead, he outlined a broader clean energy vision, which includes the development of a geothermal power project at Tapri, along with increased investment in solar energy and green hydrogen to diversify Himachal Pradesh's energy mix.
