The Tamil Nadu government has announced two ultra-mega shipbuilding projects worth a combined ₹30,000 crore, marking a major step toward positioning the state as a global shipbuilding hub.
The investments were formalized through MoUs signed during the Transforming Maritime Sector event held in Thoothukudi, and are expected to generate employment for over 55,000 people.
Key Investments:
Cochin Shipyard Ltd. will invest ₹15,000 crore to establish a world-class commercial shipyard, generating 10,000 jobs in the first phase—4,000 direct and 6,000 indirect.
Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. will set up a second shipyard with an equal ₹15,000 crore investment, expected to create 45,000 jobs—5,000 direct and 40,000 indirect.
These projects align with the state’s Maritime Transport Manufacturing Policy 2025 and follow the recent SIPCOT–V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority MoU, which aims to form a special purpose vehicle (SPV) to boost shipbuilding infrastructure and logistics.
