The Tamil Nadu government has approved a ₹8,000 crore investment to upgrade 20,000 km of rural roads under the Mudalvarin Grama Saalaigal Membattu Thittam (MGSMT), or Chief Minister's Rural Roads Development Scheme. Launched in 2022–23 to boost rural connectivity, the initiative has so far completed 9,690 projects covering 12,572 km at a cost of ₹4,609 crore. An additional 6,671 km of roads are currently under development with ₹3,529 crore allocated.
Alongside this, the state is expanding its housing program under the Kalaignarin Kanavu Illam Scheme, aiming to make Tamil Nadu hut-free by 2030. ₹7,000 crore has been earmarked to construct 2 lakh houses over the next two years, with 72,081 already completed. To improve older homes built before 2000–01, ₹1,041.32 crore has been allocated in FY25 to renovate 1.48 lakh houses in rural areas.
