Tata Steel and Welspun Corp Crack the Code for Hydrogen Highways

Tata Steel and Welspun Corp have achieved a major breakthrough in green energy with the development of API X65 grade pipes designed specifically for transporting pure gaseous hydrogen at high pressures of 100 bar. This pioneering effort was validated through rigorous testing at RINA in Italy, marking a significant milestone in the field.

Tata Steel stands out as the first Indian steel mill to produce hot-rolled steel tailored for hydrogen transport, while Welspun Corp becomes the first Indian pipe mill to manufacture Electric Resistance Welded (ERW) pipes for this purpose. This advancement is a key element of their Green Energy Strategic Partnership, which explores various pipe types to support hydrogen transport and aligns with the Indian government's green hydrogen policy.

Prabhat Kumar, Vice President of Marketing & Sales (Flat Products) at Tata Steel, emphasized that this development sets the stage for building a more robust infrastructure necessary for the widespread adoption of green hydrogen, thus contributing to a sustainable future.

Vipul Mathur, Managing Director of Welspun Corp, praised the collaboration with Tata Steel for advancing green hydrogen usage in everyday applications. Their partnership began with a 2022 Memorandum of Understanding to develop API grade pipes, and by October of the same year, Welspun Corp’s LSAW pipes passed all tests for hydrogen suitability.

This initiative not only underscores the companies' commitment to innovation but also supports the global push towards sustainable energy solutions.
