Thanjavur-Karaikal Rail Doubling: DPR Complete, Project on Track!

The detailed project report (DPR) for doubling the Thanjavur–Nagapattinam–Karaikal broad-gauge rail section has been completed, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has informed. The update came in response to a query raised by DMK Rajya Sabha member S. Kalyanasundaram.

The Minister stated that while the survey for doubling the Villupuram–Mayiladuthurai–Thanjavur section has already been sanctioned, the DPR for the 96-km Thanjavur–Nagapattinam–Karaikal section is now ready. Final approval of the project will require consultations with the State government and clearances from agencies such as NITI Aayog and the Ministry of Finance.

Currently a single-line section, the Thanjavur–Karaikal route handles both passenger and freight traffic, including coal movement from Karaikal port. Highlighting the project’s importance, A. Giri, Secretary of the Thanjavur District Railway Users’ Association, said track doubling is essential to improve connectivity and train services in the region. S. Mohan, President of the Nagore–Nagapattinam Rail Users’ Association, also urged the government to prioritise the project and allocate funds for its timely completion.
