Treated Teesta Water to Flow in Jalpaiguri by Early January

The Jalpaiguri Municipality is set to miss its December deadline to provide piped drinking water to all households under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) project, as the work is yet to be completed. However, municipal officials have assured residents that the water supply will commence in early January.

The Chief Engineer’s office of the Municipal Engineering Department (North Bengal) has directed the Executive Engineer to complete all pending work by December. In the first phase of the project, treated water from the Teesta River will be supplied to around 19,000 households. The Chief Minister had inaugurated the water-lifting process ahead of Durga Puja, with water being channelled through an infiltrator gallery to the treatment plant.

At present, Jalpaiguri’s water supply system depends largely on groundwater, but falling water tables have forced the municipality to shut down several reservoirs. The Rs 350-crore AMRUT project is designed to address these challenges by supplying up to 22 million litres of treated water daily. Emphasising the importance of the initiative, Chairman Saikat Chatterjee said the municipality is committed to ensuring the availability of safe drinking water for residents.
