JSW Energy has announced plans to expand its Salboni thermal power project in West Bengal by doubling its capacity to 3,200 MW, with a total investment estimated at around ₹40,000 crore. The project represents one of the largest private-sector investments in the state’s power sector.
The company is currently executing the first phase of the project, which involves setting up a 1,600 MW (2×800 MW) ultra-supercritical thermal power plant. This phase has already secured environmental clearance. Addressing the Business and Industry Conclave 2025, JSW Energy Joint Managing Director and CEO Sharad Mahendra said the capacity expansion would be undertaken in phases, subject to regulatory approvals and fuel linkages. The move forms part of the company’s long-term strategy to strengthen its thermal power portfolio and cater to rising electricity demand in West Bengal.
The initial phase entails an investment of ₹16,000 crore and is backed by a 25-year power purchase agreement with West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL), using domestic coal allocated under the SHAKTI B (IV) policy.
