The 70% Green Revolution: AM/NS India's Steel Transformation

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has set an ambitious target to produce 70% of its steel as Green Steel by 2027. This transition will be enabled through increased adoption of renewable energy, expansion of scrap-based steelmaking, and integration of advanced technologies such as digitalisation and machine learning to enhance efficiency and reduce emissions.

Currently, 65% of AM/NS India’s steel production is powered by natural gas, contributing to a significantly lower carbon footprint. With an existing production capacity of 9 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), the company is on track to scale up to 15 MTPA by the April–June quarter of 2026.

AM/NS India’s green steel roadmap is aligned with India’s upcoming Green Steel Taxonomy, expected in 2026–27. Under this framework, steel with emissions below 2.2 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per tonne of finished steel (tfs) will qualify as Green Steel and be rated on a star-based scale: 3-Star: 2.0–2.2 tfs, 4-Star: 1.6–2.0 tfs, 5-Star: Below 1.6 tfs

Chief Sustainability Officer Arvind Bodhankar highlighted that government-led procurement initiatives are anticipated to drive demand for green steel beginning in FY 2026–27.

Emissions verification and star ratings will be administered by the National Institute of Secondary Steel Technology, aligning the industry with India’s broader decarbonisation agenda and global climate goals.
