Indian Railways is in talks with the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and the Ministry of Power to set up small nuclear power plants to meet its energy needs. This initiative is part of the railway’s strategy to achieve net zero emissions by 2030.
Under the plan, Railways will provide land and guarantee power offtake, while DAE and the power ministry will handle plant installation and secure a fuel supply agreement. These nuclear plants will help meet the transporter’s estimated 10 GW traction power demand by 2030.
