The Big Flow: Hogenakkal Phase III Cleared for 3.8 Million

In a significant move to strengthen drinking water infrastructure, the Tamil Nadu government has approved Phase III of the Hogenakkal Combined Drinking Water Supply Scheme, with a total outlay of Rs 8,428.5 crore.

The project is designed to benefit approximately 38.8 lakh people across the Hosur, Dharmapuri, and Krishnagiri municipalities, as well as 16 town panchayats and 20 panchayat unions, covering a total of 6,802 habitations.

The scheme will draw 242.5 million litres of water per day (MLD) from the Cauvery River, which will be treated and stored in a 157.2-lakh litre reservoir. The treated water will then be distributed through a comprehensive network that includes:

32 break pressure tanks, 324 master balancing reservoirs, 598 sumps, 1,009 overhead tanks

The funding structure for the project includes:

Rs 2,283.4 crore from the Central Government, Rs 1,761 crore from the State Government and industrial contributions, Rs 4,384.1 crore through external financial assistance

This phase of the Hogenakkal project is expected to ensure reliable and safe drinking water access to a rapidly growing population in northern Tamil Nadu, significantly improving public health and quality of life in the region.
