The Big Shift: India’s Transition to a Global Energy Powerhouse

India’s energy sector has witnessed substantial growth over the past decade, with the number of fuel retail outlets nearly doubling from 51,870 in 2014 to over one lakh by 2025, according to Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri.

The minister highlighted these achievements during a meeting of the Consultative Committee of Members of Parliament on Diversification and Energy Transition. He noted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the sector has been significantly strengthened through improved infrastructure, diversification of energy sources, and a strong push towards cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions.

During this period, India’s LPG distribution network expanded by 127%, while the natural gas pipeline network was extended to cover the entire mainland. Emphasising India’s growing global stature, the minister said, “India today stands proud as the world’s fourth-largest refiner, with the natural gas pipeline length increasing to 25,429 km and LNG regasification capacity more than doubling to 52.7 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA).”

These developments underscore India’s continued progress toward energy security and a cleaner energy future.
